Whether it is the calling of Abraham to leave the Land of UR and go he knew not where, or the calling of Moses, confronted with the burning bush, or the calling of Isaiah who encountered the glory of God, or the calling of St. Paul to bring the gospel to the gentiles, an awareness of call is both mysterious and powerful. A calling is always a demonstration of the love and initiative of God, but through vocation we also come to an appreciation that God takes seriously (Smith, G. 2011).
God’s calling has three parts
- The general call which is the call to receive Christ
- The specific call which is the call for a particular office or assignment
- The call that we face daily on response to the demands of our lives.
Man was created for God’s purpose
In Genesis 1:26 the Bible Says “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”
After several years of serving the Lord, I have come to the realization that man was created for God’s purpose. From the examples of the early fathers of Christianity up till today whatever has happened in the life of man shows that we were created for him. He has planned the world in such a way that we will depend on Him for the whole of our livelihood.
God has a plan for us and want us to live by it. In Jeremiah chapter 1: 1-5, there was a conversation between God and Jeremiah. God was trying to direct Jeremiah what he wanted him to do for Him. Jeremiah did not want to accept what God was saying, so the only way God could convince Jeremiah was to tell him that hey “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” (KJV).
He made Jeremiah to understand that it does not matter whether the work is hard or easy, but it is a matter of what He wanted him to do. Life does not come with what we want to do ourselves but what the creator demands from us.
The good thing about God is that He does not force His will on us, even though He created us for Himself. He will show us His will and give us the option to choose what we like.
God’s Calling is not comfortable
Abraham was called when he was living in his father’s house. Abraham was not in need of anything from God at that time. He was just living with his family comfortably until he heard the voice of God to leave his family and go to where he was told to go. There was not a specific place that he was to go, but he believed in the voice he heard and followed it. It did not take a day or month to complete the journey but he kept on going until he finally settled in one place (Genesis 12:1-4).
If you have felt the calling of God upon your do not hesitate, please seek the face of God and do his will. It will be very good for you to follow his directions. There is no better time than now.
God’s calling is not by size, age or qualification but demands patience, and self-denial. We must be patience and be willing to deny ourselves of what we lust for.
